VIU tiwšɛmawtxʷ Celebrates 50 years of post-secondary education and training

The 2024 to 2025 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of post-secondary education and training delivery in the qathet region.

We began in 1974 as Malaspina College offering evening classes out of a small office space on Marine Avenue. Over the course of 5 decades, we have outgrown several spaces and since 1983 we have been located at our current address (which was once Gordon Park Elementary). This location also has seen growth with additional classrooms, offices and, in the past few months, a brand new, state-of-the-art nursing lab.

We have seen many changes over the years, from our physical location to the programs we offer and the communities we serve. But one thing has remained consistent: our commitment to providing personalized learning opportunities to help students reach their educational and professional goals.

Beginning with our community birthday party on campus on Saturday, October 5, 2024, we will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary with a variety of events and initiatives over the coming months. We hope you will join us in this celebration.
